Global Medical Education (GME) is learning arm of GP Foundation Ltd  aimed at providing quality online education to medical professionals specifically General Practitioners, Registrars, Practice Nurses and Practice Managers. Our website is www.globalmeded.com.au

We are an accredited provider of education through the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM). Our online learning portal allows for easy access to a variety of courses related to General Practice. All of our programs are current and within the 2014-2016 triennium for both Colleges.

The courses are taught via video or audio files, with PowerPoint presentations attached (provided through downloadable PDFs) from The University of Nebraska and affiliates. The program is taught by over 50 faculty members selected for their expertise in areas related to the successful delivery of general practice. The University of Nebraska Medical Centre faculty is internationally recognized for their ability to effectively teach and work with primary care practitioners.

The great benefit of GME is the portability of the course, which allows you take the course with you when you travel, listen or watch while you are commuting, or even exercising. Our courses range in cost from $220 - $440 and we currently have 12 packs, covering a range of topics from Paediatrics, Women’s Health and General Medicine.

How it works?
It’s simple really. If you have booked a holiday or are planning to travel, you can use a portable conference as a self-educational tool and have a tax deductible trip. The conferences are taught via video, audio and journal / article type syllabus (provided through downloadable PDFs). The program lecturers are specifically selected based on their area of expertise related to the successful delivery of general practice. The syllabus is internationally recognized from a primary care perspective.  The flexibility and portable nature makes it ideal for travel.

Self-education expenses include:
  • Course fees for the portable conference
  • Associated costs such as travel (including airfares to and from destination), meals for the duration of the conference and accommodation expenses
  • The cost of professional and trade journals, textbooks and stationery

Example: John, a GP is having a family holiday for 10 days in Singapore and purchases a portable conference that is 5 hours in duration*

Cost of portable conference $440 TAX DEDUCTIBLE
Airfares to & from destination for John $1000 TAX DEDUCTIBLE
Accommodation, meals and expenses for John for 5 nights when the conference was undertaken $2500 TAX DEDUCTIBLE
Accommodation & expenses for family holiday for the remaining 5 nights $3500 NOT TAX DEDUCTIBLE as this part of the family holiday

Therefore $3940 of John’s holiday is tax deductible under Tax Ruling 98/9.

Tax Deductibility and Conference Options

Global Medical Education (GME) can provide both short and long self-learning modules. The GME Packs / Conferences are deemed as self education or continued professional development, therefore covered under the Income Tax Assessment Act 1936, specifically self educational expenses section 51(1) and consolidated in the Taxation Ruling TR 98/9.

For the purposes of Part A of Taxation Ruling TR 98/9, self-education includes courses undertaken at an educational institution (whether leading to a formal qualification or not), attendance at work-related conferences or seminars, self-paced learning and study tours, including sabbatical (whether within Australia or overseas).
